“I don’t care how late it is, when I wake up I’m eating breakfast.” -Anonymous
The holiday season is in full swing. I can’t even believe that it’s December 9th. I looked at the date on my phone yesterday and I was literally shocked. Time is just flying by! Amidst the fun, food, festivities, and frenzy of the season I want to talk about BALANCE. It’s something I strive for everyday. I believe that the concept of balance is at the core of my blog, my approach to health, and my approach to life in general! One of my best friends, when asked to describe me in one word, responded with, “balanced!”
That, my friends, was not always the case. In fact, I was once pretty ‘extreme’ when it came to my diet. I tried low fat/no fat and low carb/no carb. I binged and I deprived myself. I was consumed by the scale and I avoided the scale. I know first hand that in order to maintain my health, I must always strive for balance. Sounds reasonable, but what exactly does that look like in a time of year when you’re overwhelmed with projects and papers, friends and finals, shopping and baking, and eating but not eating too much? Well, it usually starts with BREAKFAST.
Breakfast is, without a doubt, my favorite meal of the day. I truly believe that breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. I used to skip breakfast because I was ‘too busy’ and I thought I could drop a few pounds by skipping. Unfortunately, I’d inevitably end up snacking throughout the day, making up for any lost calories…big time! Nowadays, I always begin my day in the healthiest way possible, with a nourishing breakfast. I always aim to include some healthy carbohydrates and a bit of protein to start my day on the right foot. I also can’t imagine an AM meal without fruit… or coffee!
Breakfast helps you concentrate, improves your mood, and lowers your stress. Long term it helps lower your chance for high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. If you want to stay balanced and keep your tummy happy this festive time of the year, make sure to start your day with a balanced breakfast. If you don’t have time to whip up some eggs or cook some oats on the stove top, try overnight oats, or a slice of g.free toast with some almond butter and a few slices of banana. Try a fresh fruit and Greek yogurt parfait, or a tasty nutritious smoothie. Grab an apple and a nut-based nutrition bar if you must… but make sure to get something healthy into your tummy!!
How about you? How do you maintain balance this time of year? Do YOU eat your breakfast everyday?
P.S. These are just a few of my favorite breakfasts as of late… be sure to follow me on Instagram to see more!

You are totally right, Cailee! Breakfast is by far the most important meal of the day. We usually just go with cereal or some Greek yogurt topped with granola. Back when I didn’t know better, I would skip breakfast thinking that it would help me lose weight (less daily calories)…but now I would never miss breakfast! Good thoughts in this post…thanks!
December 9, 2015 at 3:50 pmThanks David! I feel like that’s definitely a mis-conception lots of people have… no breakfast = less calories = weight loss. The problem is, come mid afternoon you’re STARVING, and usually over-compensate for those calories you ‘saved.’ At least that’s how it worked for me.
December 11, 2015 at 5:06 pmYour pictures are just lovely, and also you have really beautiful dishes! That’s really wonderful you’ve gotten to a point that you could be described as balanced. I think I’m still a work in progress on that front (still fall prey to all-or-nothing thinking), but overall I’m sooo much better than I used to be when it comes to my diet and exercise!
December 9, 2015 at 8:05 pmAwww! Thanks Haley! …and praise God! I used to have an awful relationship with food, but now it’s so balanced and happy! It definitely took time, but it was so worth it. I know you can do it!! 🙂 I believe, “It’s about PROGRESS not PERFECTION!”
December 11, 2015 at 5:03 pmI’m a huge breakfast fan, too! I can’t function without it 🙂 Plus I’m waaaay to hungry by the time lunch rolls around if I don’t have something in my stomach!
December 9, 2015 at 9:55 pmYes! I just need something to start my day… and by something I mean a balanced meal! I can’t even imagine going without!
December 11, 2015 at 5:01 pmI could never make it through any part of my life without breakfast. And my decaf coffee. Well, half caff. I think I’ve only had a handful of days in the past 10 years where I’ve not woken up and been ready and willing to eat within the hour!
December 9, 2015 at 10:20 pmI love it! Yes to coffee and yes to AM noshing!! <3 Glad you agree Suz!
December 11, 2015 at 5:00 pmI’ve totally been there with the extreme eating. It was only when I gave myself no rules that I really relaxed and found a way to eat that makes me feel whole and complete! Breakfast is totally my favourite meal too 🙂
December 9, 2015 at 10:46 pmYes yes YES! I couldn’t agree more! 🙂 Wise words my friend… and same, I adore brekkie!
December 11, 2015 at 4:59 pmHahhaah I love that anonymous quote at the top. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day!
December 10, 2015 at 12:41 amME TOO! It’s just the best! …it sets a lovely tone for the day ahead!
December 11, 2015 at 4:58 pmI love this! I totally agree. I usually let my body tell me when it’s ready for food in the morning, but skipping it is never an option! Great post, those oats look dreamy!:)
December 10, 2015 at 1:45 amThanks Heather! And yes to intuitive eating! All about that 🙂
December 11, 2015 at 4:58 pmOk YUM!!! I’m a huge breakfast fan and these pics are making me hungry 😉
December 10, 2015 at 5:34 amThanks Rachel! These are just a few of my fave ways to start the day off right 🙂
December 11, 2015 at 4:57 pmI love lazy weekend breakfasts the most, but during the week I begin my day with fruit before having some home made granola 🙂
December 10, 2015 at 6:19 amYay for lazy breakfasts, those are my fave! <3 And yum!! Sounds like such a healthy way to start the day!
December 11, 2015 at 4:57 pmI have never understood how people can skip breakfast. If I didn’t eat first thing, I would be VERY angry by about 11am haha.
December 10, 2015 at 11:15 amHaha! I can’t even imagine skipping breakfast! I can’t believe I used to a few years ago. What was I thinking??
December 11, 2015 at 4:56 pmNot even going to lie, It’s 7am right now, I’m sipping on coffee and my stomach is growwwwwwling. So hungry!! So yes, I’ll be off to get breakfast as soon as I’m done here. I can’t go more than an hour after waking up without some form of food. Sometimes it’s just something small to get me through my morning workout, other times its a feast 🙂
December 10, 2015 at 3:05 pmI’m glad that you found what works for you! That’s the thing, everyone’s different! I guess I probably don’t wait much longer than an hour after I get up to eat breakfast. I usually eat around 10:30 am! Haha, that’s only because I take night classes and usually stay out pretty late, so my schedule is often a bit behind everyone else! hahaha
December 11, 2015 at 4:55 pmTotally true! It’s all about balance. I’m usually not too hungry in the mornings so I have my water first and then a smoothie. On days when I am more hungry (and I have more time) I’ll do things like a veggie tofu scramble or fruit and avocado toast.
December 11, 2015 at 1:37 pmYay for balance! …and yum! all of your eats sound super healthy and seriously tasty!! 🙂
December 11, 2015 at 4:53 pmI like routine so I always try to eat breakfast in the morning. In the Winter it’s usually a cup of tea with a English Muffin with some soy butter on top. It lets me chill out for 5 minutes before the day starts.
December 11, 2015 at 5:44 pmNice! I agree, it’s such a great way to start your day off right!
December 21, 2015 at 4:59 pmThat breakfast quote is soooooo true! I could eat breakfast for any meal, really. It’s such a comforting way to begin the day.
December 11, 2015 at 5:55 pmAgreed. Breakfast food is seriously the best!
December 21, 2015 at 4:59 pmOh yea, let us breakfast lovers unite! 🙂 I eat breakfast every day, and I love eating fruit as part of my breakfast too. Lately I’ve been doing green juice for breakfast a lot. It’s nice to get in all those servings of veggies & fruit nice and early in the day!
December 11, 2015 at 6:29 pmYay for breakfast love!! …and yes to green juices! I just drank one with breakfast this morning 🙂
December 21, 2015 at 4:58 pmBreakfast is my favourite meal too! I love making banana pancakes, or having a piece of toast with natural peanut butter and fresh fruit. Have a nice weekend 🙂
