It’s that time of year again! …Just check out all the blogs posting recipes for cute little pastel colored cupcakes and rice crispy treat bunnies with jelly bean eggs. Walk down the aisles at Target and check out the shelves stocked with brightly colored marshmallow Peeps, more varieties of chocolate candy than you can count, and adorable plastic Easter baskets– just waiting to be filled by eager Easter Bunny moms and dads. Spring has Sprung and Easter is on its way! But what is the fuss really all about??
Don’t get me wrong, I just love Easter! It’s a special time to spend with cousins and grandparents and eat some tasty baked ham with green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, and those cute little jello eggs. All these treats and traditions are lots of fun, but the best and most important reason I love Easter is because of what Easter really means.
Easter has become synonymous with chocolates and bunnies, but it’s SO much more than that! We are NOT perfect people. Romans 3:23 tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And God is a fair and just God– He can’t allow sin to go unpunished. But God is also full of mercy and grace. He sent His son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross as the ultimate sacrifice to pay for our sins. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus wasn’t just some ‘preacher’ or ‘a really good man’. He is the Son of God who died to pay our debt, so that we can know Him and love Him and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. This is why Good Friday is so good. Jesus conquered death and rose again on the third day! His resurrection shows His power… power that can be ours if we accept Him as our personal Lord and Savior!
And THAT, my friends, is why I love this holiday. Happy Easter!
